5 years on: timely EU action to support COVID-19 research

In an article on LinkedIn, the EU looks at the response the European Commission took the same day the World Health Commission declared COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

VEO was a part of the following response. Though VEO had just started in January 2020, the project was poised to look into just this type of situation. In response, the European Commission asked VEO to develop a response; and VEO developed two additional Work packages that would complement the already existing Work Packages (such as Work package 9 Disease X) that would support the coming response work to COVID-19.

Work Packages 15 and 16 were added to VEO; COVID-19 Response and COVID-19 Variant Response, respectively.
Work Package 15 had the following objective: To provide a suite of analytical tools, storage, and data sharing workspace to facilitate the sharing, analysis and reuse of raw and annotated SARS-CoV-2 genomic data, including information on variants.

Work Package 16 had the following objective: To provide an overview of SARS-CoV-2 sequence variants of concern for epidemiology and immunology, as well as information of the importance of minority and majority variants for the pandemic. Genomic data and analysis thereof are described and reported through WP15. This WP focusses on the generation of phenotypic data that are needed to validate the effect of genomic changes on viral properties.

VEO also supported the creation and development of the COVID-19 Data Portal. The concept of sharing such data has also been used for recent mpox outbreaks.

VEO will continue its work through 2025.
